Top Iran general says destroying Israel ‘achievable goal’

The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Monday that destroying arch-rival Israel has become an “achievable goal” thanks to his country’s technological advances.

“This sinister regime must be wiped off the map and this is no longer… a dream (but) it is an achievable goal,” Major General Hossein Salami said, quoted by the Guards’ Sepah news site.

Four decades on from Iran’s Islamic revolution, “we have managed to obtain the capacity to destroy the imposter Zionist regime”, he said.

Salami’s comments, while not unusual for Iranian officials, come amid particularly heightened international tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and a series of incidents that have raised fears of a confrontation between Tehran and its other main regional rival, Riyadh.

The United States, which withdrew from a landmark nuclear deal between Iran and world powers in 2018, has imposed a campaign of “maximum pressure” — with vocal support from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The comments by the commander of Iran’s ideological army were given prominent coverage by the Tasnim and Fars news agencies, close to ultra-conservative political factions.

The official IRNA agency also carried his remarks, but placed more emphasis on his assertion that Iran was growing stronger and would finally beat its foes despite “hostility” towards it.

In contrast, foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi in a tweet wished “Happy (Jewish) New Year to our Jewish compatriots and to all true followers of great prophet Moses (PBUH)”, an acronym for ‘peace be upon him.’

Mousavi’s greeting was written in Persian, English and Hebrew.

Iran only has a few thousand Jews left compared to between 80,000 and 100,000 before its 1979 revolution.

The country has been consistently hostile towards Israel since its revolution, and Tehran openly supports anti-Israeli armed groups including Palestinian Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

‘Cancerous tumour’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an outspoken opponent of any rapprochement between Tehran and the West, has charged that “Iran calls for Israel’s destruction and they work for its destruction each day, every day, relentlessly”.

He welcomed his ally US President Donald Trump’s decision in May 2018 to pull out of the landmark nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers, arguing the deal would “enable Iran to threaten Israel’s survival”.

Israel considers Iran its archfoe and has carried out hundreds of strikes in neighbouring Syria against what it says are military targets of Iran and its Lebanese military ally Hezbollah.

It has vowed to keep Iran from entrenching itself militarily in the war-torn neighbouring Arab state.

In June 2018, supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reaffirmed Tehran’s long-held position that Israel is “a malignant cancerous tumour that must be removed and eradicated”.

But he has also said that Tehran has never called for the Jews to be “thrown into the sea”, unlike Arab leaders such as the late president Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt.

Iranian generals routinely express the desire to destroy Israel or claim to be able to wipe out Tel Aviv.

However, official discourse in recent years has generally taken care to clarify that the Jewish state will cease to exist because of its own “arrogance”, not because of an attack by Iran.

“I met more than two Nigerians who are doing legitimate businesses and the turnover runs into millions of dollars and they employed 50 to 60 South Africans.–Obasanjo.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised Nigerians evacuated from South Africa following the xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in the Rainbow Nation to get ready to go back.

This is because he is confident the meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, next month will yield a positive outcome.

The ex-Head of State said Buhari and Ramaphosa should be ready to make the right statements that would encourage the Nigerians who returned home to go back to South Africa.

Obasanjo said this on Saturday in his Abeokuta residence when asked by reporters what he discussed with Ramaphosa last week.

He said Ramaphosa told him that he and Buhari would discuss how xenophobic attacks on Nigerians could be stopped.

Obasanjo said,

“I took the opportunity of being in South Africa to actually pay a courtesy call on President Cyril Ramaphosa and he quickly granted me the opportunity. One of the major things we discussed was this issue of xenophobia or Afrophobia.

“The President told me that there was so much at stake and whatever mistake we had made, we had to correct it. And I think that was a very good statement and I know that he meant it, because he immediately said ‘what can we do or should we do?’”

He advised South Africans to tread softly on the issue of foreigners seeking opportunities in their country.

He said,

“The idea of thinking or saying that foreigners are taking your jobs should be killed, because most of these foreigners paid something into the country.

“I met more than two Nigerians who are doing legitimate businesses and the turnover runs into millions of dollars and they employed 50 to 60 South Africans.

“All these must be expressed and must be shown that Nigerians in South Africa are not drug peddlers and criminals; there are many of them that are genuine businessmen and professionals and who are making meaningful contributions to the economy and the social life of that country.

“I think that is all we must be doing and be saying and my joy is that President Cyril Ramaphosa is ready to do what needs to be done to stop these incidents and to put the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa on the right track.

“One of the things they are going to do between South Africa and Nigeria is that they are going to have what we established during my tenure – that we called bilateral commission.”

On the Nigerians evacuated from South Africa, Obasanjo said,

“I hope they will go back to the South Africa from what I heard from President Ramaphosa. Like I said, the meeting that President Buhari and President Ramaphosa will have during the first week of October should smooth the ground. And the right statements and the right action coming from both sides should encourage our people to go back.

“But, as I have always said that Nigerians living outside Nigeria must try to be good citizens of wherever they live.”

According to him, Ramophosa is ready to bring back the mutual understanding between Nigeria and South Africa.

He said,

“I believe the President of South Africa did the right thing to quickly send emissaries to apologise to the countries that were affected (xenophobic attacks), countries like Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique and I think this was good.”

Obasanjo said Nigeria spearheaded the fight against apartheid in South Africa to ensure that the black man was not treated like a second-class citizen anywhere in the world.

He added,

“The record must be put right and we must let people know what has been done for all. What do we do for some of the people who helped us during our own civil war; what do we do? Some people don’t even remember those who helped us now, South Africa has got rid of apartheid since 1994. The young people who are agitating today don’t even know what we did. But we shouldn’t blame ourselves for that because we did what we did and we will do it again.

“There is no gratitude as such, what is in there is common interest and it was our enlightened self-interest and we don’t demand anything from South Africa for what we did. We did it because we believed it was our responsibility to do it.”

How Baby factory was discovered in Lagos by the Police.

Men of the Lagos State Police Command have rescued 19 pregnant young women and four children during raids on four baby factories in the state.

During the raids, two suspects, Happiness Ukwuoma and Sherifat Ipeya, were arrested while the principal suspect, one Madam Oluchi, absconded after she got wind of the raids on the baby factories.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said in a statement on Sunday that a manhunt had been launched for Oluchi, adding that the suspects were operating as nurses at the baby factories despite not having formal medical training.

He stated that Oluchi and her accomplices usually tricked their victims from different states of the federation with promises of employment opportunities in Lagos, but abduct them for the purpose of getting them pregnant and selling their babies to potential buyers.

Elkana said,

“On Thursday, September 19, 2019, around 4pm, acting on the strength of information from a reliable source, detectives from the Isheri Osun Police Station, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Chike Ibe, stormed a building at No. 14 Adisa Street, Ayanwale area, Ikotun, Lagos, suspected to be used for child trafficking.

“Nineteen pregnant women from the ages of 15 to 28 were rescued and four kids were also rescued. They were all rescued from four different locations – No. 32 Owosho Street, Governor Road, Ikotun; No. 29 Olugbeyohun Street, Olakunle bus stop, Abaranje; No. 4/6 Anomo Street, Abaranje; and No. 14 Adisa Street, Ayanwale area, Ikotun. The pregnant women were brought in from Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Abia and Imo states.

“Two suspects, Happiness Ukwuoma, 40; and Sherifat Ipeya, 54, were arrested in connection with the case. The suspects are natives of Imo and Lagos states and did not receive formal medical training, but operate as nurses. The command has launched a manhunt for the principal suspect, Madam Oluchi, from Mbano, Imo State. She is a mother of five.

“The young women were tricked with employment as domestic workers in Lagos and abducted by the suspects for the purpose of getting them pregnant and selling their babies to potential buyers for between N300,000 and N500,000, depending on the sex.”

Elkana stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, had visited the scene and ordered the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to take over the case, adding that the command had been working with other agencies and stakeholders to rehabilitate and resettle the pregnant women and the babies.

He added that investigation was ongoing and the suspects would be charged.

In another development, two suspected cult leaders, Osonye Henrise and Babatunde Fadairo, have been arrested for terrorising the Bariga area of the state.

Elkana said Henrise was arrested for attempting to kill one Bosiga, while Fadairo was apprehended for leading his gang to stone one Ahmed Saul to death at the New Garage area of Bariga, adding that the suspects would be charged.

He stated,

“On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, around 11.30pm, one Osonye Henrise, 24, an Aiye Confraternity kingpin, was arrested by detectives from the Bariga Police Station on Idumota Church Street, Bariga, for attempting to kill one Bosiga on the same date on Araromi Street, Bariga. The suspect is believed to be the second in command to one Adekunle Adesanya, aka E don tey, who was killed on September, 24, 2019, on Edo Evans Street, Bariga. Investigation is ongoing and the suspect will be charged.

“On Thursday, September 26, 2019, around 5.15am, one Babatunde Fadairo, 22, was arrested by detectives from the Bariga Police Station. The suspect was alleged to have led five others to kill one Ahmed Saul, 32, with stones at the New Garage area. The suspect is a known Eiye Confraternity member, while the deceased was an Aiye Confraternity member. Investigation is ongoing and the suspect will soon be charged.”

“We are committed to ensuring fairness in all what we do, particularly in the distribution of appointments and infrastructure, among others—Oyetola.

The Governor of Osun State State, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Sunday said he followed due process and adhered strictly to merit, before releasing the list of nominees for cabinet positions.

Some members of the All Progressives Congress have been accusing the governor of marginalisation since last Tuesday when the Osun State House of Assembly released the list.

Specifically, the people of Ifon town, the headquarters of Orolu Local Government Area of the state, had alleged that Oyetola did not reward them for voting for him.

But the governor, in an interview with journalists at the Government House, Osogbo, after the prayer session organised to mark his 65th birthday, appealed to the protesting citizens to remain calm.

He said,

“We have followed the due process in the choice of the people that made the list and everybody that we have picked it was based on merit.

“There are quite a number of other positions that we can fix our people in. As a matter of fact, everybody cannot make the cabinet.

“We are committed to ensuring fairness in all what we do, particularly in the distribution of appointments and infrastructure, among others.

“I can assure our people that those that we picked are people of substance who were chosen by their people and the party,” Oyetola said.

Earlier in his his lecture at the event, the Mufasir-li-Imam of Osogbo, Sheihk Maroof Ishola, urged the governor to dedicate much of his time to prayers and thanksgiving to God for the mercy of God on him and his family.

Meanwhile, the APC in Osun State said on Sunday that it had confidence in the ability of Oyetola to transform the state.

The party, in its congratulatory message to mark Oyetola’s 65th birthday, signed by its spokesperson, Kunle Oyatomi, said the governor was on “the threshold of a distinguished career in governance.”

The statement read,

“Your efforts on health care infrastructure since you assume responsibility as governor have been remarkable.

“You have also since then resurrected that cost efficient culture of fixing broken and failed sections of our roads before they become death traps.”

In a related development, the candidate of the APC for Obokun State Constituency in the 2019 general elections, Mr Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, congratulated the governor, describing him as a visionary and respected leader who was living a life of simplicity and rendering service to the people.

HOW CAN NIGERIANS LEVERAGE ON THE BASICS 1?

No doubt about it,it is a known fact that our challenges in this part of the world is quite enormous and scary with no single form of solutions in sight to douse the effect of the anomalies and abnormalities that were created and moulded by maladministration rooted in  visionless leadership our dear nation is blessed with.

What do I mean by “leveraging on the basics”?

The basics in this write up simply connotes some of the basic achievements been experienced in the day-to -day realities an average man on the streets is experiencing in terms of low cost of procurring some certain goods recently.

It is on record that some areas of residence in Lagos State are enjoying good electricity supply of which my area of residence have been enjoying hours of uninterrupted power supply recently.

This improvement in Electricity supply is out of the blue and it is an achievement that no one ever expected in this part of the world since Nigeria has a nation has been plaqued with por electricity supply for ages.

This improvement is an indication that if Nigeria as a nation can look inward and think about what could be done to address the issue of poor electricity supply practically and proactively, the issue of poor electricity supply would end up becoming a thing of the past.

This can be achieved when the approach of Nigerian government about providing good infrastructure becomes a priority and approaches about developing basic amenities that will have a chain value addition on the quality of living of Nigerians are put in place.

In another vein, the downward trend that the cost of cooking gas is experiencing is amazing going by the fact that the last purchase of 12.5kg of gas I bought was at #3000 from#3500 I use to buy it.And it has gone down to #2800 recently.

With thease two realities mentioned above, one could noticed that it is not difficult for the economy of our dear nation to improve if only we are ready to put what is right in place.

If the cost of every basic necessities of life keeps going down gradually, poverty will surely fizzle out and our dear nation will be known for a viable economy.

A good and a viable economy is neither by magic nor it is gotten by space science,  it is resident in the accumulation and investment of ideas and methodology that are potent enough in empowering the masses through the provision of basic amenities that could drive the economy and made it viable.

If electricity supply improves, more cottage industry will spring up and more people will become employed leading to a kind of competition in the production of goods and services that will end up making the cost of such goods and services to go down gradually.

inf

A good electricity supply drives the economy to be competitive and it is when the economy becomes competitive that the cost of production will do down with prices of goods and services having a downward trend that is natural.

This becomes achievable when all the parameters necessary to make the economy of the country are looked into one after the other.

One of the basic parameters needed to be looked into is the provision of infrastructure and basic amenities that has a direct impact and influence on the living standards of average Nigerians.

Some of these basic amenities will become a driving force that will help in developing small and medium scale enterprises that has been known to be the foundation of every developed economy all over the world.

It is of essence for leaders in this part of the world to think deeply and develop blueprint about how the Nigerian economy can become viable in a short period of time.

Having a viable economy in Nigeria is the only solution to some of the vices and social evil that seems to be overlwhelming the Nigerian society. It will contribute extensively to douse the ever increasing insecurity challenges been experienced across the length and breadth of the Nigerian society.

If a larger percentage of our teeming youth are catered for through social welfare schemes with many been gainfully employed, the waves of insecurity will experience a natural death.

All these can be achieved when the economic parameter that will drive the achievemnet of viable economy is provided and it all rallies around the provision of basic amenities.

Let’s continue to leverage on the basics.

The kind of improvement observed in electricity supply can also be extended to other sectors of the economy  gradually.

Once other sectors started picking up by being efficient and effective, the Nigerian economy will have a hope of becoming better gradually.

“It is indeed a crime, he stressed, for any parent to keep their pupil child out of school for this period.–PMB.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the detention and dehumanisation of about 300 boys and men in a building at Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The police had raided the building, rescued about 300 victims and arrested seven teachers of the Islamic centre, including its proprietor, Mallam Ismaila Abubakar, who insisted he did nothing wrong than teach the detainees Islam.
But some of the victims as young as five years old said they had been held captive for years. They said they were tortured, sexually abused and starved. Many of them, with visible injuries, had metal chains around their ankles.
Reacting to the episode, President Buhari commended the police for discovering what he termed a “horrific hub”, saying the so-called ‘reform institution’ where the detainees were kept was unedifying.

He said free and compulsory education remained a right for all children.
Buhari’s reaction to the incident was conveyed in a statement on Saturday in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu.
The Presidency stated, “We are glad that the Muslim authorities have dismissed the notion of the embarrassing and horrifying spectacle as an Islamic school.

“The place has indeed been described as a house of torture and a place of human slavery.
“The President holds the view that children will be safeguarded from roaming the streets and protected from all evil influences that assail idle hands and minds when they are sent to school.
“When he inaugurated the National Economic Council for the year 2019/2023 at the Presidential Villa, in Abuja, President Buhari warned that keeping children away from school was a criminal offence.

“He also stressed the need to take seriously and enforce the statutory provisions on free and compulsory basic education, citing Section 18(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which he said placed on all of us (public leaders and political office holders) an obligation to eradicate illiteracy and provide free and compulsory education.
“He added that Section 2 of the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Act provides that every government in Nigeria shall provide free, compulsory and universal basic education for every child of primary and junior secondary school age

“It is indeed a crime, he stressed, for any parent to keep their pupil child out of school for this period.

“While the government at the centre has introduced a number of programmes, including the school feeding programme, which is now in 32 states in the country, with 9.8 million children beneficiaries to encourage school enrolment and enhance the health and learning capabilities of pupils, state and local governments are obliged under the law to ensure that every child of school age goes to school throughout the crucial nine years of basic education.

“To stop unwanted cultural practices that amount to the abuse of children, our religious and traditional authorities must work with the federal, state and local governments to expose and stop all types of abuse that are widely known but ignored for many years by our communities.”

Meanwhile, the police have handed the 300 children they rescued from an Islamic school in Rigasa in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Thursday over to the state government.

The boys were allegedly chained, tortured, sexually assaulted and starved at the school.
Some parents of the rescued children on Friday protested against the raid on the centre.
They asked the police to release their children, insisting the allegation by the force that the children were being sexually abused was false.
Spokesman for the police in the state, DSP Yakubu Sabo, said on Saturday the state government would in turn hand over the children to their parents.
He said, “Yes, we have handed over the children to the state for onward reunion with their parents. The children are victims, not offenders.”
“They were handed over to the state government on Friday. On the issue of whether parents gave their consent, the school will always want to look for support from the families that are loyal to them so that they could get themselves off the hook.
“Whether or not the parents were the ones who handed their children to them or not, there is a limitation to what can be done to a human being.

“According to law, even if it is the father that subjected his child to inhuman treatment, there is a level where he will be held liable for his action.

“Nobody is questioning whether the parents took their children there or not. What we are saying is that the inhuman treatment meted out to these children was a violation of the constitution.”

The force had claimed that many of the children were from Burkina Faso, Mali and other African countries.
Sabo said the seven people arrested during the raid were being investigated.
He claimed the centre had no licence to operate. He said, “As far as we know, they have no documents to show that they have a licence.

“Even If you have a licence to run correctional programmes, that in itself does not give you the right to run educational programmes.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Ali Janga, on Thursday lamented the dehumanisation of the children.
He said, “The man operating this home claimed that parents brought their children here for rehabilitation. But from the look of things, this is not a rehabilitation centre. No reasonable parent will bring their children to this place.”
According to the proprietor of the centre, all they do at the school is to teach the Holy Qur’an.
Meanwhile, Sabo said they would charge the suspects after concluding their investigation.

Why Salah votes were not counted by FIFA?

FIFA has explained why some votes for Mohamed Salah to win The Best FIFA Men’s Player award was not counted.

Liverpool star Salah did not finish in the top three of the ballot, with his nominations from Egypt’s captain and coach not included.

Salah appeared to be upset when FIFA’s full list of voting was released without his country’s selections.

He reportedly removed a reference to Egypt from his Twitter bio and posted a cryptic message that read: “Whatever they do to try to change my love for Egypt, they will not succeed.”

FIFA moved to clarify why those particular votes for Salah were not counted in a statement released to Omnisport on Thursday.

The governing body said:

“During the monitoring of the votes submitted by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) on August 15, it was remarked that the signatures on the voting forms were in capital letters and thus seemed not valid (not authentic). The voting forms were also not signed by the general secretary which is mandatory.”

FIFA added the President’s Office of the EFA, which has undergone recent structural changes, was contacted about the issue, with no response received in time for the votes to count.

Further questions have been asked of FIFA about the voting process for The Best awards.

Nicaragua captain Juan Barrera claimed on Twitter he did not vote although his name is listed on FIFA’s official document, which says he chose Lionel Messi, Sadio Mane and Cristiano Ronaldo as his top three.

“We have checked the voting documents submitted by the Nicaraguan FA and all documents are signed and confirmed with the official stamp of the Nicaraguan FA,” FIFA said.

“Having compared with the vote sheets submitted by the federation and the ones we have published on FIFA.com… we confirm that we have the right votes signed by the player.

“We are asking the Nicaraguan Football Federations to inquire on this matter.”

Messi was named as the men’s winner, ahead of the likes of Salah, Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk, and long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

USWNT star Megan Rapinoe won the women’s award, while Salah’s Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and Rapinoe’s international coach Jill Ellis took the trophies for best coach.

“People perhaps think the rivalry goes beyond football, but it doesn’t.—Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi says his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo is only on the pitch.

Messi and Ronaldo were seen chatting at August’s UEFA awards ceremony as Virgil van Dijk claimed the Men’s Player of the Year award.

The same trio were nominated for the Best FIFA Men’s Player award with Messi pipping Van Dijk into second and Ronaldo in third at Monday’s Milan prizegiving.

Messi and Ronaldo have each won five Ballons d’Or having spent their careers vying for individual honours, as well as for team trophies with Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

Released results for the Best FIFA Men’s Player award showed Messi put Ronaldo second in his vote while the Portugal superstar did not include the Barcelona captain in his selection.

Asked why people are surprised to see him getting along with Ronaldo, Messi told FIFA’s official website: “Because of the big sporting rivalry that’s developed between us over the last few years. Because one us played for Barcelona and the other for Madrid, and because we won individual awards.

“People perhaps think the rivalry goes beyond football, but it doesn’t. We both want what’s best for our teams and neither of us like losing. It’s something we don’t accept.

“That’s why there’s that competitiveness between us. The important thing is that it stays there, out on the pitch.”

Messi is now helping to develop Barcelona’s 16-year-old forward Ansu Fati, who has exploded on to the scene in LaLiga this season.

“I really like him and I try to help and support him,” the Argentina attacker added. “He’s an amazing player and he’s got what it takes to succeed.

“But if I look at it through my eyes, I’d like them to bring him on gradually, like they did with me when I started, taking things nice and easy and without putting pressure on him.

“You have to remember that he’s only 16. I hope he keeps on enjoying it and that all the fuss around him doesn’t have a negative impact on him because he has the quality to become one of the best.”
